The challenge
What this project had to solve.
The challenge: the original galley kitchen was walled off from the home's single best asset — the ocean view — and from the living space where the family actually gathered. What we did: we opened the plan, repositioned the work zones, and set the island on a sightline that pulls the water into the room, while choosing materials that read warm and hold up to a coastal environment. The result: a kitchen that finally connects to the view and the rest of the home, and works as hard for everyday meals as it does for entertaining.
Scope of work
A Del Mar home with an enviable ocean view had a kitchen that couldn't see it. We removed the closed-off galley layout, reworked the floor plan to open the kitchen into the adjoining living space, and built a large island as the new anchor of the room. Custom oak cabinetry, durable quartzite counters that stand up to coastal cooking, and warm brass fixtures were selected to suit the light and the salt air — finishes meant to look intentional for years, not just on move-in day.
